Dr. Jose Guerra - Obstetrics/Gynecology
Dr. Jose Guerra, popularly called “Chepe” among colleagues, is an obstetrician/gynecologist. In obstetrics, he deals with pregnancies, whether normal or high risk; in his over 26 years of practice, with 20 of these as a specialist, Dr. Guerra has delivered over 1,000 pregnancies. As an obstetrician he treats diseases that affect females, he is also concerned with educating mothers, especially young mothers, on proper health care during and post pregnancy. Similarly, outreach to females on healthy sexual lifestyles is part and parcel of his practice. He began working with the Ministry of Health in 1984, and completed specialist training in February of 1990. He was at the Old Belize City Hospital, then came over in September 1995 when the hospital was transformed into the KHMH.
Trained in Guatemala at the Universidad de San Carlos for his initial medical doctor degree, and then in Mexico as a specialist at Hospital de la Mujer in Mexico, Dr. Guerra was led to Karl Heusner by his deep and abiding commitment to improving women’s health, particularly their reproductive health. In fact, his commitment to the KHMHA is so abiding and longstanding that if you should ask Dr. Guerra what he enjoys doing in his free time, he would probably look at you in a puzzled manner and say, “My free time?” With typical 12 hour days, though, he still finds the time to spend with family on weekends.

Dr. Ruth Gough - Obstetrician/Gynecologist
Dr. Ruth Gough joined the KHMH in 2006 as part of the Ob/Gyn team of specialists. Previously, she was in private practice for a couple years. Today, her days are filled with dealing with the vast range of diseases and conditions that affect women (gynecology) and with pregnancies (obstetrics). Typical surgical procedures include pelvic, breast, ovarian, and vaginal surgeries. A particular area of interest for her is high risk pregnancies and fertility problems, and she trained an additional year and half in Mexico City for just this. Additionally, because nutritional expertise is part and parcel of dealing with problems of infertility, Dr Gough took up course work in Mesotherapy therapy and nutrition to support her interest in this area, particularly as weight loss and gain are critical to effective hormonal fertility treatment. Recently, the weight/health program that she initially conceived to support the infertility treatments has taken on a focus of its own in terms of being used to assist her patients with other chronic diseases whose effective treatment is supported by healthy lifestyles. She also holds private clinics for patients requesting assistance in weight loss or practicing healthy eating habits. Additional specialty areas of interest to Dr. Gough are colposcopy for diagnosis and treatment of precancerous problems of the cervix and medical ethics.
Dr. Gough attended medical school in Mexico City at the Clinica de Especialidades de la Mujer, which is part of the army hospital in Mexico, City. Dr Gough graduated in 2004. Her personal mantra is “Solving a problem begins with understanding the problem,” and this has been honed from her experience in dealing with women of all ages who present. A calm voice, a relaxed manner, and strong listening and observation skills are all useful communication tools she employs in providing quality care for the diverse female populations she encounters. Hobbies include spending quality family time and interior decorating.
